Use Natural Hair Products For Less Breakage

By Maria Wright

A lot of people have been led to believe that once hair has become damaged from braids, chemicals or hair extensions, it is hopeless. Some hide behind wigs or visit specialists that work with them or a period of time. While the latter may be an effective long term solution, it often comes with a high price tag. If the specialist has training or formal education in trichology, they may be able to see some other issues that require extensive care. However, if the hair was generally healthy before a person got the hairstyle, they should just try using natural hair products for a while.

If a person were to peruse the many brands that are out there, they will see the possibilities are incredible. Most people can wear coily twists, a curly afro, or just enough to reveal the natural wave pattern they were born with. Anyone who likes to style their own hair may find they can have a new look for every day of the week.

On the flip side, the consumer should take a close look at the product and the ingredients it lists. Not all are made the same, even those the label indicates it is for natural styles. Some products may be too heavy for certain types of hair or not provide enough moisture. If a consumer is in doubt, they can either talk to a licensed cosmetologist or do a strand test with a glass of water.

What a lot of people are learning is that health is more important than the latest style or color trend. When the mane has suffered from breakage, it can cause a person to lose confidence or make them feel their only hope is to hide behind a wig. Although some may individuals may need to chop off a significant amount to allow new growth, these products can hydrate the shaft while temporarily wearing a wig or extensions.

Twists and similar styles are ideal for those who want to take a break from the salon, or at least take a break from long wait periods and the expense. While some natural hair tools may seem expensive on the shelf, one has to compare this to the number of salon visits they make annually. Another factor is the purity of the ingredients used.

Besides being messy, strands that are oily with a product will not grow as fast, no matter how much is used at a time. It can also weigh down tresses and prevent real hydration. Many experts recommend hot oil treatments with a nut or olive oil for moisture that is not heavy.

Reversing damage is fairly easy for most but the process can take some time. However, if the scalp has been damaged or there is no progress after several weeks, it is best to see a licensed healthcare professional or dermatologist. Only they can treat conditions like alopecia or get to the actual cause of loss.

Although a person may feel they have an easy hairstyle, maintenance is necessary. A scarf preserves the styles for a few extra days and silk fabric helps keep the moisture in. The scalp will also be healthier if it is brushed at least once a week.
